Date Posted:20/10/2014 08:32:27Copy HTML Hi, I'm new to the site. Just looking to buy a Dodge 50 Horsebox G Reg 1989, It looks great and ticks all the boxes and is clean and tidy, went straight through MOT in Sept, but there is an oil leak around the bell housing/back of the engine area, not sure exactly where from. Should I be concerned, it's not much, small patch on floor about 40mm dia over the weekend. As I say I'm new so not sure on engine type etc etc.

Re:Oil Leak from Gearbox bell Housing area Date Posted:21/10/2014 06:51:27Copy HTML hi and welcome
Now I would say it is one of two things and both will require the gearbox being removed, it is either the gearbox itself from the front seals or the engine rear crankshaft seal which is behind the flywheel, if you were to first smell the engine oil say From the dipstick oil and then the leaked oil, if they are the same smell it is the engine seal, if totally different and the leaking one is smellier then it is the gearbox These are the most common problems that can cause this.

Re:Oil Leak from Gearbox bell Housing area Date Posted:27/10/2014 06:17:37Copy HTML Colour may be a clue too ... even old gearbox oil tends to retain a golden syrup/treacle colour (unless your bellhousing is full of clutch dust and it's turned black on it's way out :-)
Leaking a bit of oil is a Dodges way of getting a regular fresh top up If it's a diesel, it's probably a Perkins Phaser 90 (or 110T if turbo-charged) it seemed like a good idea at the time
