Date Posted:21/03/2008 03:29:31Copy HTML So I recently went through the grueling task of running out of diesel and subsequently remembering that the manual primer was shot and I had meant to install an electrical one awhile back. With borrowed car and a trip to the local NAPA auto parts store here in N. California on the beautiful Pacific Coast I figured to get some diesel but didn't have a can. So since they're all race car drivers like the owner of the shop and NAPA they gave me a can with a bit of methanol left in it. It strikes me as funny now since I run my truck on veggie oil that I was worried about getting all the methanol out of the can before I filled it up with diesel.
But then later I thought about it. Bio-diesel is a mix of veggie oil and methanol catalyzed with lye so methanol and diesel would be a fairly similar mix. Anyway when the truck fired up she was really roaring. But don't get me wrong you don't want to go fueling your diesel with methanol: you may however want to go out and find some biodiesel the more pure the better. Both veggie oil and biodiesel have higher output per mile than diesel and both are cleaner. Biodiesel is the cleanest by far when it's made in a lab, about 30% cleaner at B100 or 100% biodiesel with no diesel. Veggie oil is next at about half that much cleaner and lastly is 'homemade' biodiesel which is under 10% cleaner. Go green - We owe the planet for our fuel. |
