Date Posted:27/01/2013 10:30:08Copy HTML Hello, I have joined you good people since I have become the proud owner of this vehicle....
Its a Volvo TP 21 radio vehicle...they originally has a straight six petrol ED engine with a 4Wd High low box and Air lockable Difs. My vehicle has had a Six Cyl Perkins diesel fitted from the dodge 50 truck. Still low high box and 2/4wd and of course volvo's lockable diffs. Here is the engine just before fitting. CAn some one identify this for me and point me in the right direction for service parts etc. I would also be interested to see if a Turbo was available for this particular engine and would it be a good idea. My vehicle needs a little more Ooomph. It has bags of torque but it would be nice for it to rev up a little quicker. My understanding is that its 4Litre give or take a few cc. its Reasonably economic and is a good substitution for the original ED volvo petrol engine which was missing from the vehicle before it was re-built. Any info gratefully received! Its lots of Fun!! |

Re:Hello! Date Posted:02/02/2013 10:49:43Copy HTML Very nice truck
I would say it is the perkins 6.247 4050cc 6 cylinder known as the perkins jap 6 or jap perkins 6 as it was sourced or the design was from japan but made by perkins. Looks like the alternator is on the bottom right of the engine & the engine & gearbox mountings are correct for the dodge 50, is it 4 speed gearbox? No turbo option & would not be a good idea to fit one cos it will blow the engine up. Yes charlie childs for engine parts is the best option his details are in the handy contacts section here http://forum1.aimoo.com/Dodge50/Handy-Contacts/Perkins-Engine-Parts-contact-Charlie-Childs-1-1003055.html . Re:Hello! Date Posted:10/06/2013 10:40:18Copy HTML Hello all, I contacted Charlie Childs and he says he has no parts for my particular Perkins, service or otherwise which is a pity however I'm sure I can source most of it. The coopers diesel filter is no problem, the oil filter is slightly awkward, does anyone know what was fitted? I suppose I'll have to drop the oils and remove the old filter and try to match it.
On another note the gearbox and transfer box appear to be from the dodge 50. Here is a photo of it going in when the previous owner restored the vehicle. Can anyone tell me if there is an overdrive for this unit? And is it a ZF box? I have seen a Sugga in Sheffield which has a 5 speed ZF box and was wondering about getting hold of one as an answer to the low gearing that I have on this vehicle. It seems to be flat out at 40 MPH I can't alter the diffs so its a gearbox / transfer box or overdrive solution. Any help identifying the box or a solution gratefully received. Best regards Adam |

Re:Hello! Date Posted:10/06/2013 10:47:58Copy HTML Hi
That gearbox / transfer set up does not look like the zf 5 speed which was usually mated to the phaser 90 engine, the 4x4 dodge 50 series vehicles and the MOD spec RB44 were mainly fitted with the spicer t5 250 or 290 box which doesn't look like that either, the T5 was usually mated to the phaser 110t engine. The rear prop is also much thinner, i do not think that has any dodge 50 fittings. Have you got pics with the engine and gearbox in and drive train intact? Re:Hello! Date Posted:10/06/2013 11:30:44Copy HTML Thanks for that much appreciated
I shall try and get a photo of what is actually in there! the only other photo I have is this one as the engine was about to be put in I think the box in the top photo must be the transfer box/Hi, Lo? its hard to visualise it from the sofa!
