Hello all Dodgers,

Does any one know if the sills on the S46 cab are structural? My 50 has rusted where the inner wheel arch closes the front of the sill section just behind the front wheel. Repairer wants to know if a spot welded plate would be OK or does it need to be seam welded?

Any advice appreciated

Steve

They are not structural as far as I am aware but any rot within 30cm from a structural point has to be welded, though in this case I would have thought spot welding it and it looking solid should be ok, I cannot say for sure though. Wish I could.

Thanks, Karrier. The rot is well away from the cab mounting points. Also I'd have thought the chassis provides the stiffness against bending that the sills provide in a chassis-less lightweight van.

I think we'll go with a spot welded plate. The Ministry test is due in two weeks and because we're only a horse box the testers are usually fairly relaxed. They seem more interested in the '50 because they don't see many of them. Out of interest do you know how many are left "on the road"?  Ours is used regularly but we don't see anything like the number we did say 10 years ago at the horsey do's.

Thanks again for your reply.

Just to let you know, the spot welded plate passed OK - no comment from the tester.
