I saw recently saw this smart Dodge 50 outside a garage in Swansea.

It was painted gloss NATO green, and had a NATO towing jaw and NATO trailer electric socket, so I guess it's ex military.

I thought the British army only took four wheel drive RB44 chassis cabs, so I found the military spec two wheel drive S56 integral panel van very interesting.

The interior had immaculate Renault Traffic style grey and rainbow cloth trim in the front.  Judging from the excellent condition I'd say it was reserve stock which had spent most of its life stored indoors.

Straight side panels, and not a speck of rust on the arches and wings...unprecedented! :-)

The MOD bought 1000's of mk1 and 2 50 series over the years, porton down had 6 cylinder petrol S56's, navy had S56 and S75's as well as the army having the rb44's, also the us airforce used s56 vans and chassis cabs on their uk bases, my bus has an engine out of one of them.

Nice looking van.

Thanks for the good information.  I wonder what happened to them all.  I've never seen another Dodge with NATO spec bits.  Perhaps they all rusted away

Nice looking van.

The mod buried about 100 rb 44's in iraq, I know this for fact, cheaper to bury them than repair / return them to their bases.

bastads.

They do this sort of thing a lot...divers are always finding ancient WWII kit which had been pushed overboard back in the day....:-(

I'm about to receive the bill for getting my S56 library van serviced and MOT'd...The right hand track rod end alone cost £115, so I suspect it would have been cheaper for me to ship it to Iraq and have it buried there...:-)
