Hi all
Just got myself an RB44 and need either front and rear prop shafts or U.J's to get it through the first VOSA test.
Anyone have or know of anyone with any.
Part no.s would be useful if you know them

And does anyone know what wiper arms would fit, as the cheeky sods took them off and I didn't notice when buying it.

Cheers

who would want to nick the wiper arms ?

theres no value in taking them, other than it being an annoyance for you to sort a replacement.

I used standard old Ford arms to replace the originals with the pin type blade connections (which were hard to find replacement blades for) - replacements probably came off the back end of a Mk3 Capri

bought new Bosch blades, 24" for drivers side and 20" for passenger side IIRC, as my line of sight is quite high and i've a van

you probably wont need arms/blades as long (Capri front arms would likely do) in the shorter screened chassis-cab (possibly depending on whether you've reconfigured the seating position) - can check measurements - have spare Capri front arms here if needed (although I only used them as they were to hand - a wide range of the hook type arms would do the job i'm sure - bit awkward sorting replacement washer jets - ended up going to the local Volvo truck dealer on MJ's advice and getting a pair of clip on 4-way's - designed for a wider arm but can be secured easy enough)
it seemed like a good idea at the time

I might have some used wiper arms, will look tomorrow, the correct blade size is 16 inch on chassis cabs & 20 inch on high screen vans though I used to use 22 inch on my bus.

 Thanks for the help.
I've got some disco arms to try tomorrow, if they're no good I'll try the ford ones.

Pulled the front prop out today and got some part numbers to track down, DANA SPICER so shouldn't be to much trouble to find.

cheers

p.s. anyone know the light switch functions, its got 8 positions and only the one side light and one tail light is coming on at present.
dead bulb in the other side light and one tail light is missing, but I've yet to find any electrons any where else yet.

sorry for all the questions but I'm trying to get it MOT'd and registered this week coming, might be a bit of a push though;)

Got myself a new front prop complete from Crouch recovery, a touch on the pricey side but I got a KAB suspension seat for a bargain price so cant complain.
Think I'll pick a a spare pair of axles as well some time soon, might have a play with a Disc conversion.

if you go back, please keep an eye out for a pair of transfer box chassis hangers - if you see a pair accessible, whip 'em off for me!

I did see a pair, but stupidly didn't take any tools, but I will probably pay another visit in a few weeks if your not sorted out by then.

unlikely to be sorted but can always hope!

got a few pointers regarding a slipping sound I get in transmission (somewhere between mid-rear) when pulling up hill from rest - apparently at least some of the transfer boxes have some kind of tensioner shoe that allows for some tightening of the chain but have yet to open one up and see first hand

discovered the rear prop UJ was on it's way out so spent the rest of the afternoon cutting and shutting a 49" shaft to replace it (37" shaft on 366cm wheelbase) while I try and locate a new UJ and/or replacement shaft of correct length

be interested to know what you had to pay for the front prop and by front, do you mean the short section between gearbox and t/box or the longer small diameter section from t/box to front axle with double UJ - also, where had yours failed (or was it bent)?

I dunno if they let you remove parts up there at Crouch's yard as not had the pleasure yet - the bolts that pass thru the hangers/t-box eyes have been known to seize in the bush sleeves and can be a pig to free without damaging either the bolt, bush or both - brackets with no t/box hanging off them might fit the bill tho, if it's just the dozen small bolts that need removing ...

Paid £200 for a brand new boxed prop shaft, transfer box to front axle. The front UJ had died due to lack of lubrication, and the sliding joint is a bit looser than I would like. Crouch only have 2 left.
Seems the military didn't follow their own maintenance schedule at all, with only the easy to do major things like oil and filter changes being done.

Careful with cutting and shutting props because they usually need balancing as well. If you need to get one made try Recoprop, they make made to measure prop shafts for a quite reasonable price, tell them the gearbox and axle and the distance between the flanges and they will do the rest, quick turn around as well.

thanks for the info - i'll give Reco-prop a call tomorrow - DIY cutting/shutting not ideal but looking at the state of the UJ, with bits of the needle? bearings falling out and a lot of play, decided it was better to put something in it's place than leave it any longer - going to try and find a replacement UJ to repair my original 37" shaft next week but decided against attempting to remove and refit a UJ from the longer prop

the tube is only 3mm thick - hopefully any blobs of weld on inside are only a few grams and not significant enough to throw up too many problems on the old dog, at least short term

£200 for that double UJ'd t/box to front axle shaft sounds reasonable new and boxed - don't imagine the likes of Recoprop would do one for less

really need to start looking inside transfer case and find/cure the slippage - chains/cogs seem to be prime suspects - if I can get the '44 hangers and fit a NOS box to keep vehicle running, can then get stuck into the issues in my '75 box without having to imobilise the van (no alternative motorised transport!)

are you sure it is 366cm, looks like 323cm wheel base to me, the 366 vans have 4 full size side body panels, yours has 3.

Fitted my new prop-shaft yesterday, had to strip it to fit the rubber gaiter. The splines were virtually dry, as was the old shaft.
I would suggest you strip and grease the shaft before fitting, not just squirt with the grease gun.
It looks like the U.J.s failed due to being bone dry as well.
Looks like the maintenance has been a bit hit and miss on my truck, despite the relatively low mileage.
May explain some of the problems encountered with these vehicles.

havn't got any further towards replacing my DIY shaft yet (got distracted with other areas of the vehicle, a common problem since there is always a load of things need looking at!), other than sourcing some replacement UJ's

suprised your new front shaft didn't come with the gaitor fitted

there's plenty of grease inside my sliders and UJ's - not peeked under that gaitor on front prop tho - got any photos of yours without gaitor on?

get the impression a number of people using the RB's in the forces didn't get on with them, what with all the initial (and ongoing) problems with the wandering under hard braking - perhaps maintainence was a bit lacking as a number of people weren't keen on using them!
perhaps they were driven through a lot of deep water without the extra care and attention that kind of usage deserves?

at least you won't have to spend weeks with the welder repairing it :)

The props were made by Proptech  (?)in Kidderminster, they made me one up with more normal sized uj's for a fair price.
