A few weeks ago I posted about a 50 mk1 van I was looking into buying. The van will be used as a food truck. I've since gone to see it twice, once with my mechanic. He told me that the engine, chassis and suspension is all in good condition. Inside doesn't look great but it will be gutted anyway. The only issue we can find is with the brakes. Simply put, they don't work, apart from the front left. Mechanic reckons it is the master cylinder. Any thoughts on this? I know I can fit a Land Rover cylinder on it, but should I be looking into re-lining and refurbing as well? And can an S46 be downrated to an S35? Thanks and heres the picture I promised (notice the grill is not original). The van also comes with 2 spare tires, a spare rim and a spare steering box.  |

Brakes and downrating Date Posted：16/11/2014 05:02:06Copy HTML Hi and that does look nice that van, yes downating can be done easily if under 3200kgs physical weight, as for the brakes, could be the rubber rear hose or load sensing valve at fault but reconditioned cylinders and new shoes if required along with a new master if needed will sort it out, I can supply linings or shoes on exchange as well as most other brake parts, hoses lines etc as well as drum internal parts

Can a job like this be done DIY or should I be asking a mechanic to sort it? As for downrating, any idea what a van like this might weigh? |

the brakes, well it depends on your confidence with a spanner, if it is just changing parts then a decent tool kit and someone like me on the end of a phone and most things can be done, recondition of parts will need to be sent off, so kinda depends what ya like with a spanner. Brakes and downrating Date Posted：17/11/2014 10:48:53Copy HTML I supply reconditioned front cylinders for £110 each and Rear are £130 (plus postage) on exchange and usually 6 to 8 working days turnaround in the UK, the returnable exchange fee has to now been set at £100 per cylinder as I have had so many not returned over the last year I now have very few left to supply, or I can arrange for yours to be reconditioned if they are sent to me or direct to the reconditioners, my prices are the same as their retail prices so it doesn't cost any more going through me as I have an account with them :)
If you can get done locally it will be far cheaper if they have the correct set up, I can supply seal kits if required or technical info :-) These are reamed out and a stainless steel liner is inserted so the bore will not pit / rust again, they are better than original in that respect. The reconditioning does not include the slotted disk adjusters and these and the retaining clips and shoe web lug should not be included if sending yours for reconditioning as you may not get them back. one more thing, how much should I be paying for the van? seller is asking for €2,400 (just under £2,000). mechanic reckons a lot of money was spent on the chassis and suspension as it is all clean. the brakes are poor though and look like they might cost some time and money to sort. I wanted to bring him down to €2,000 (about £1,600) is that too much or too little? |
