What kind if weight will you be carrying on your trailer?

The only 50 series vehicles with a compressor that runs off the engine are the S75 (7500kgs) vehicles, I guess you could fit an external compressor that runs of 12v or another source, why do you need air brakes on a trailer?

i am hoping to buy a plant trailer that can carry 19 tone for work purposes for recovery but rather than it just siting there if i could tow it behind my truck it would be handy every now and then if the trailer is air or hydraulic is there no way of getting the trailer to work of the s46 brake system ?

I think you would have to fit an external compressor, not sure how you could use the vaccumn system to get the brakes on a trailer to work though. How big is this trailer & how much does it weigh & is it not too big to go behind an S46?

the weight dataon the bottom of this brochure page will give you some idea of the maximum weights   http://www.dodge50.co.uk/gallery2/s46--90-brochure-p1.html

also does your licience  enable you to drive with atrailer over 3500kgs?

19t? what does it go unladen?!
I had visions of an old army 5.5t drawbar trailer, the kind they used as mobile workshops etc., at least some of which had air couplings and would likely keep a Dodge entertained, by the time you've filled it up with junk

i'm guessing your S46 train weight is around 7100kg - sounds like a combination best kept well away from old bill!
(or more to the point, any steep hills)
it seemed like a good idea at the time

Yes the maximum Gross Train Weight is 7100kgs, the vehicle will weigh at least  2500kgs as a chassis cab, so add to that the weight of the body / extra fittings so maybe up to 3500kgs with full fuel tank and driver, you cant tow a trailer that is heavier than the towing vehicle so you would need to load the vehicle to about 4000kgs to be able to tow a 3000kgs trailer.

a  friend used to tow a 5000kgs trailer  (for no fit state circus) with his S75 4x4, the vehicle was loaded to 6000kgs, vehicle train weight was 11,000kgs (as is allowed on the S75 4x4), it went all over europe but it did eventually kill the vehicle.

i now a s46 and a s75 are different weights  but havent they got the same engine if so wouldn't that make them have the same pull ?

Its more to do with the brakes as well as the chassis being weaker, the road springs would have to be uprated and you would have to uprate to 6600kgs to get a better train weight of 9100kgs
see http://www.dodge50.co.uk/downrating/RDE076.doc for info.
You wont be able to uprate to 7500kgs though, just not viable.

Re:brakes to trailer

i'm not convinced about the chassis being weaker when comparing a S46 to a S75 - my S46 was pre-drilled in the factory for the air tanks, QPV, QRV etc., unless air over hydraulic systems were fitted to some sub-7.5t models?
the 7.5t crossmember between the rear leaf-spring front eyes does have a plate welded to the underside tho, whereas the S46/56 equivelent is 3-sided

as for having the same pull, gearing obviously plays a part - an example being my 46 was fitted with a 4.3ish rear axle ratio and the 75 axle I replaced it with fitted with a 4.8ish diff, although fitted diffs are obviously very much dependant on original contracts and what replacement units were to hand if/when needed

Greg, your friend with the circus, when you say killed the vehicle, what gave out, the Perkins? and/or other components?

would I be right in thinking 4ltrs is quite a modest capacity for use in a road-going 7.5t vehicle?
it seemed like a good idea at the time

The paperwork says the s75 chassis was 23 ton per square inch and the others were 19, half a mill thicker too. Engine of 4 litres is on the small side for a 7.5t vehicle in my opinion. He killed the vehicle When the front axle broke and the Engine was in need of rings and bores, the springs were shot and transfer box on the way out too.
