I recently disconnected my starter motor on my MK 1 and rather foolishly did not make a note of the connections. There are three terminals on the solenoid, one is connected by a bar to the motor itself, then there is the small spade connector which I assume is fed from the ignition, and then there is the last one.  I have three cables that were connected to the solenoid, thick black (from the batteries?), brown (approx 4 or 5 mm), and white with red (mainly white).
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Is it normal for the starter motor to have an earth strap to the body?

Hi the thick brown is the main battery feed and goes to the top main threaded connection, the white with red stripe goes from starter relay which is under the radiator expansion tank and goes onto the little spade connector and the black one should go on a slightly larger spade connector which also goes on the top threaded connection, don't forget the earth strap on the starter body too chassis,
