Hello Everyone,

In my search for data regarding trying to identify a particular English Diesel I hit upon relevant text on your board.
http://dodge50.aimoo.com/Engine-Help/Identifying-what-I-now-believe-1-1004039.html
Had to subscribe to view. I'm contemplating what I might do with a brand new 2.52L BMC, slanted version that is still on a pallet after 25 years. It has no manifolds or flywheel.
Engine ID Tag indicates 25U/253B/D 3068

My main hobby is diesel conversion www.4btswaps.com. I've put a Cummins 4bt into my 1988 Jeep Wrangler.  I'll be motrizing my bicycle too. http://motorbicycling.com/

Suggestions, comments and information are most welcome.

Thank You

Hi there, The engines in topics on this site are mainly the Perkins variants which were standard fit to the British built Dodge 50.
Perhaps you could find someone knowledgeable on a British classic truck type web site for info on a BMC engine.??
Unless anyone does happen to have any knowledge on BMC`s on here.
Land Rover enthusiasts used to fit BMC diesels to the Old Series 2 L/R`s in the days when standard diesels were a bit weak for the job. so theres another option,Old  Land Rover guys ?  Regards JFB

 Hi there

As JFB says the perkins diesel was standard in the dodge 50, I don't have much experience with BMC's only having to bleed them after running out of fuel many years ago now.

I would do as JFB said, search for BMC engine questions on uk servers, as there is more chance of finding the help you need, I mean like www.google.co.uk rather than www.google.com.

Good luck with your projects.

Thanks for the input and advise. On the linked thread Ir-exporter had stated "Hi, I,ve got all these BMC Diesel engines on the shelf" so that's why I even bothered to post on your board. I'm contemplating using this slanted BMC in a Dodge 225 cu. in. slant-6 application.

Ah I see why you came here now, I will dig out lr-exporters email and get him to come and visit here as someone else is trying to get hold of him.
I will email him tonight.

With all due respect What kind of output HP do you expect to get from a 2.5 BMC ? How does that compare with the trusty 226.   I just ask because as a boy I remember our 2.5 diesel Series 2 109" having to go into low ratio to get the Vickers manufactured  caravan up gradients.! As long ago as that (1960`s) it didnt instill much respect  from me for the early diesels until proper diesels came along .
I suppose it depends on ones chosen enthusiasm really.Regards JB

Hi, i know a fair bit about bmc diesels, these 2.5 underfloor engines were used in the BMC (later Leyland) EA range of vans from 1968 till around 1983. They are a good reliable old-fashioned plodder. Horsepower is around 60. An ideal engine for a boat or stationary application, (generating set, compressor etc.) To be honest, i would not waste time putting this in a road vehicle, they really don't have enough power. I have BMC LD van (predecessor to the EA), originally 2.2 petrol, and i put in a re-con BMC 2.2 diesel, (vertical type) which is the same, but slightly smaller bore. The thing is ok around town, but has no cruising speed whatsoever. 45 MPH in top is really pushing it! The gearing is the same on the petrol and diesel models, by the way. I don't think it would pull much taller gearing anyway! When i get the time, the petrol engine's going back in i think! Sorry to be negative, but that's my thoughts. Hope this helps!

Karrie, JB & PerkinsDodge, Thanks for all of your inputs. It's mainly parts availabilty and power information about that engine that I was searching for. The engine is brand new and still on a pallet. Seems a shame to see it go to waste. Even to try and use it in a static situation like a generator or a boat power plant would be imprudent for me as there seems to be no real support for it in the USA. The unit needs manifolds and a flywheel. I was able to double my fuel economy in my Jeep by diesel conversion and looking into the possibilities of this BMC/Leyland plant in some automotive application.
