Hey all

Am new to the site, and wanted to say hello.

I have just bought a Renault 50 Horsebox and i get it on saturday.

all i really know about it is its a Mkii, 3.9L Perkins Phazer, rated at 5.6t, and it looks very well kept and hasn't got a stupid milage.

its a bit of a step down from the erf artics i'm used to driving but i'm looking forward to getting it.

i've had a little drive of it, but when i collect it i've got a 1.5 - 2 hours drive with it so are there any particular quirks to the vehicle that i should know about ?

cheers

mike

hi Mike, welcome to the nuthouse. all i know about dodges is they all want to be an RB44 of some description ;).  sorry that doesnt answer your question, but from your description, i reckon you will trundle home for 2 hrs without any problems.  i'm sure someone a bit dodgier will point you in the right direction soon enough.  have fun.  Hi there

And welcome.....quirks....well we they all have their own I reckon, I have 4 50's myself, a s56 bus, a s75 van, a s66 crewcab tipper and a s56 30ft motorhome and they all have their own little quirks, differences in speed for one, from 50mph (motorhome) to 75mph (van).

Brakes, well at least the 50 series 2x4 stop in a straight line, well most do unlike the RB44 eh Herrcut? (RB44 being the army spec 4x4 dodge 50)

Most people who get a 50 either fall in love with them or are non plussed (sp?), we have fallen for them, strong and pretty reliable, parts is the main worry but over the last 7 years we have built up a bit of a network. I had renault trucks head office phone me yesterday, looking for hazard light switches.

On wards and upwards, we are also holding a dodge 50 owners meet up in may, see the news section for details, any problems or questions however serious or silly, feel free to post them in the aproprite areas on the forum, if you post a wanted thread in the for sale section, you might find I move it if I notice.

Enjoy.

Although a routine check for proper drivers. Check engine oil before you bring it away.  Both my Phasers use oil and need topping up in between 4,000  mile oil change services. They dont burn it they tend to blow a fine mist out of the breather pipe which will show a drip under engine after a journey. But all is normal. not due to wear. Enjoy it !

thanks for the replies

i'm pretty confident about it as part of the deal was for it to pass an MOT

I was going to check everything over before driving it, then when i get it home i was planning to re check everything when its cold.

i was also going to let it tick over for a few mins before driving it away as its been stood for about 2 weeks since the mot and about a month prior to that.

i was also planning of putting an inector cleaner through it and about halfway through the drive back pushing it for awhile (do 70 for half an hour - rather than my usual style which is to sit behind a lorry)

but i've got lots of questions regarding maintenance, but those will come later on.

might have to come along to the meet, i'm sure that there will be alot of knowledge there

drove it back with now problems

it ran really nicely.

got a few issues with it - need to fix the mirrors - as they kept moving, needs a radio fitting, other than that just a good clean and maybe some underbody sealer.

i did find that it seamed to have a bit of turbo lag, is that normal on a 110 perkins engine ? also the speedo constantly made a rather annoying clicking noise - any ideas ?

i'm also a little concerned that the drivers and passengers doors didn't seam to fit perfectly, is this normal or is there a way of adjusting them ?

As for the turbo I think that it just helps to up the power & torque a little I wouldn`t say it is a really noticable BOOST !
these are just old slogging engines happiest at about 55-60 mph. The speedo cable routing may be causing any jumping with the needle making a clicking noise Well thats what I reckon mine is doing. (Or a frayed cable inside the cable sleeve)
Doors can be helped to close better by adjusting the lock locating keeper pin on the door pillar. Are yours the smaller truck cab type doors ? Not the tall Van type that some chopped off body conversions have. Cause the tall ones are a poor fit at the top and usually have some hard foam type seal at the top. Mine used to rain in if the roof water was running off at that corner. Posible hinges could be slackened off and adjusted for better fit but I have never looked into it. JB
