hi, am new to this site and to the world of dodge, was wondering if anyone can help, I am the proud newowner of a 50 series s56 and want some advice about the weight limits as I have a new style driving licence (up to category b - 3500kg). It is a 1989 two axle rigid body, 5600kg gross, taxed as private HGV, MOT as motorhome, the cylinder capacity is 3900 but on the v5 is 2500>???, I want to know whether I can drive this without a C category or having it reweighed??? What is the unladen weight (kerb weight?) ofthis vehicle???, any help would be much appreciated, many thanks ........
Sorry mate I dont have unladen weights in my book ,Perhap one of the other guys may help. Is there nothing on your vehicle plate on the drivers step area that gives you payload and Gross vehicle weight to work it out. ?
This kind of subject has been covered previously have you checked through the archives. ? Cheers

Hi there
I think you will find you have fallen into the vehicle weight trap.
The vehicle may weigh less than 3.5 ton but is infact classed a 5.6 ton vehicle, and therefore the vehicle falls into the 3.5 to 7.5 ton taxation class, as a private hgv you need to change your driving licience catogory or downrate the revinue weight to 3.5 ton PLG to be legal. If your vehicle weighs over 3.5 ton then you will have problems as you cannot downrate it and will need licience change.
Go to a scrapyard or public weighbridge and get it weighed then you will know where you stand
5600 (gross i assume) yup
8100 (with trailer??) yup
2150 max weight on front axle
4000 max weight on rear axle
But a maximum of 5,600kgs total
unladen weight depends on body type
go HERE FOR SOME BODY WEIGHTS

hi again, well i took her to get weighed and shes 3500 kg as she is, thats with spare tyre, gas bottle, me and missus, sink / hob etc, looks like its going to be alright, one more quick question is it better to have her reweighed minus all the gas bottle, wooden slats, junk etc or is it fine to be right on that limit as long as i dont chuck a couple of bags of sugar in the back : ), thanks for the quick replies and for putting my mind at ease, great site !!!!

Morbidman,
How did you get on. I'm in the exact same position but need an MOT, tax and insurance before I can even get near a weigh bridge.
I don't want to pump money into something I'll never drive.

Cheers Karrier,
By VIN number I'm hoping you need this one:
SDG-B56-A3-E-H-D-217522
Chassis Number: HD217522
We are not looking to do anything fancy, just kit her out well enough to get round Europe for a few months. I reckon we need 1000kg to play with minimum.
This is my maths: our body weight (4 lads) 320kg + full tank (85 litres) of diesel (75kg), + a water tank lets say 20 litres (20kg) = 500kg (ish)
Plus some bunks, sink, etc.another 500kg?
So hopefully the weight of the empty vehicle will be around 2.5tonnes? Empty being all the passenger seats stripped out.
Thanks Karrier, I hope you can give us some good news.

Hi there Ok I also have a s56 bus, unladen it was 4,000kgs with seats and is now a conbverted tourbus which carries all my tat and there is loads, i stuck it on the weighbridge at my local scrappie, i do have a yard there thouigh so was easy and it came out at 5,000kgs, i was well surprised i must say. I reckon all told, full tank and a 150 litres of water and all the spares i carry and all my circus equipment it now sits about 5,400kgs max. I dont know what body was fitted to yours as it was sold as a dafe (drive away front end) and then converted but i guess it will sit at about 4,000kgs empty. If you need to keep within the 3.500kgs limit because of liciening restrictions (did you pass your test after jN 1997?) YOU MIGHT BE UP THE CREAK ALREADY !! Let me know and we can take it from there, if you ok on licience then 1000kgs added will be ok on an s56. your vehicles build spec sheet is here http://www.dodge50.co.uk/Chassis%20numbers/MK1%20Chassis%20from%20Feb%2087%20to%20-%20Aug%2087/HD217509-HD217757/00000016.jpg ok am off to bed cos it is 1am Greg

Hi Karrier, That wasn't the news I was hoping for!!! None of us passed before Jan 97!! Never mind, I kind of thought this was not going to be easy. I guess we will need to look at two of us getting the C1 licence, or selling the already beloved bus and buying something else. Having looked around the forums I see this is quite a common problem, you havent come across and creative ways around this have you? I just never anticipated the guts of the vehicle to weigh so much. Thanks very much for your time Karrier,

Karrier, I may have given you the wrong info, you have an S56? " I also have a s56 bus, unladen it was 4,000kgs with seats " Am I correct in thinking I have a B56. The document you provided a link to shows the model as B56. The weights you were discussing were the weights for your S56. Is there any difference betwwen the two models? I apologise for being so useless. I am on a steep learning curve!! Many Thanks Paul

RE:help with weight???
(Date Posted:09/01/2008 06:13:21)
Hi there again me with bad news I am sorry to say, the B56 and S56 are one and the same, on the vin numbers they are as B56 and renault / dodge call the Mk1 1979-87 models RB56 and the Mk2 1987-93 are R1B. But because the vehicles are 50 series they became badged as S35/ S46/ S56/ S66 and S75. Now there are some views that a campervan / motorhome can be driven up to 7,500kgs on a standard licience, though that would need to be checked out a bit, frankieflintstone has posted stuff and links about this but there is conflicting information on this. I will see if I can get you an answer from dvla and post it up.
Ok you could drive / get someone to drive it to a scrappie to get it weighed. will get back to you. Greg

RE:help with weight???
(Date Posted:09/01/2008 09:19:05)
Thanks for the quick reply Greg, That clears that up! There was a small glimmer of hope that you had provided the wrong weights, shame its not that simple. I will try and contact Mr Flintstone and if you could get an answer form the DVLA that would be fantastic or even point me in the right direction as to what questions i need to ask them. I have considered taking it the 20mins to the nearest scrapyard, but with no mot, tax or insurance I just cant risk it. I have a contact who may stick it on a lowloader but will have to wait and see The bit I dont understand is that I could legally drive one of my Dads tractors on the road which must weigh over 3.5 tonnes. Is it to do with the type of vehicle? It would be a real shame to have to let her go go as we only paid £100 for her and she seems to run very well and is in pretty tidy condition. These vehicles have alot more character than anything else we could pick up. Im off to DVLA website Thanks once again Greg.

Hi Greg,
Just to let you know you were spot on. We got her weighed and she came in at 3.9 tonnes with a more or less empty fuel tank. So with a full tank I think we can safely call that 4 tonnes.
Time to get cracking with a c1 test!!!
