Hello.

As a frequent visitor to the site over the last couple of years I thought it was about time I subscribed. I have 2 dodge 50 series, one is a 1985 cherry picker (tatty and hanging toy) and one is a 1989 RB44 S75. The RB was originally a 7.5 tonne gross with a gross train weight of 10 tonnes as per the original plate with dual rear wheels. When it went to Reynolds Boughton for conversion the dual wheels were changed for single wheels and so the vehicle was down rated with an additional Reynolds Boughton weight plate. It now has the dual rear wheels refitted and I was wondering whether this could be replated as 7.5 tonne gross and 10 tonne gross train weight. Is it possible to determine if the springs have been changed/ or how many leaves should they have? Do you know the reason why Reynolds Boughton fit only single wheel rear; is it to do with extra ground pressure for 4WD traction?

Hope some people can shed some light on thisEmotions

Hi there, Only my opinion But I reckon that boughtons fulfilled a specification requirement only needing single wheels for their 2.25 ton payload needs and NO air brakes. A different rear axle( Dana type ) was also used compaired to the heavier fitment to the utility company trucks like yours.  Someone will no doubt enlighten you as to the no. of spring leaves for the 7.5  but to run fully laden and fully laden trailer I think progress may be a little slow with the 4 cyl motor.   Regards   JFB

 Ello

Ok the s75 4x4 with twin rear wheels and 17.5 x 8.5 or 205/75 x 17.5 tyres will be ok for 7.500kgs.
The springs are the same springs as on the standard s75.

Tanc who has a s75 4x4 with twin wheels has an 11 tonne train weight and has been known to pull this weight to germany and back on the phaser 110.

The s75 with single wheels were weighted as 6.600kgs and still had air brakes.

I would have thought that if the s75 4x4 has been downrated and the wheels replaced it can easily be uprated again.

I dont have the uprating / downrating information for the s75 or 4x4's but they might have had a spacer block added between the chassis and bump stops which will need to be removed.

The rb44 was essentially a s56 that has been pimped to mod 4x4 spec

The rear axle on the s75 4x4 I think was a modified dodge uk ax9 5.7t.
But I dont know too much about the actual workings of the 4x4 as i have never had one.

evenin all.  i'm led to believe the mod rb44 has single rear wheels so that rubble doesnt get stuck between the tyres and shred the tyres.  you wouldnt want  blown out tyres in a war zone! utility rb's probably need the extra traction to get to and from remote pylons up soggy tracks/cuttings in winter after storms.i'd be surprised if the mod used rb's off road in deep mud/soft ground. mine sank upto its axles  in mud on a farm  last summer when i went to rescue a tractor, which had broken down in the farm entrance. no wonder the mod specified makeshift winches on all 4 wheels. i've not used them yet, but i'll have a go when i have acquired some cable and a land anchor. any one got a spare land anchor? or cable ?please. all the best folks.H

Thanks gents for all the replies so far. The rubble jamming reason sounds most probable. Working away at the moment so will go and see the ministry when I get home. Also I will have all the precise details then i.e., axle weights etc. I will look for any spacer blocks also as well as check the VIN against the register for axle spec. etc.
Cheers for now

Have both VIN plates but am working away at the moment so cannot get to them. I think that the gross train mass was 10-10.5-11ish tonnes before. Will check when home. Am interested to know wether 'Tanc's RB44 or 'herrcut's was previously a single wheel rear. Will see if I can get VIN number sent to me.

Got it! VIN is SDGB75AOGKD221150 So yes the rear axle was/is a AX9 option 5.7t axle with a 4.875 ratio. The original Renault Weight plate reads as GTM 11000, GVW 7500, GAWF 2500, GAWR 5600

Tancs is a s75 4x4 and came with dual rear wheels, herrcuts is a rb44 mod which is a different model based on the s56 and only ever had single rear wheels.

Hi Herrcut.      I learned that the  welded on wheel rings are  " Helecopter lifting rings" So  i guess you need  slings and a chopper to try em !!
As for gettin stuck there are some places that 4X4 `s  just aint up to & weight seems to win , Hope you did`nt do any damage pullin him out.    Cheers  ,   John
PS.  By the way   is that RB75 4x4 in the picture an automatic batbarnett ?. I remember one just like it near Oldham 10 years ago.

Yep! This is an automatic and I bought it in Oldham about two years ago and drove it down to sunny Cornwall. Since then I have taken on commutes to various places in the UK and it hasn't missed a beat. The trailer in the avatar (picture on the left!) is often towed as well for shifting cars and other bits of debris I pick up from time to time.
